Management Trainee Programmes for Freshers

Overview

A management trainee programme hires freshers as trainees, trains or rotates them for a fixed period, and then confirms them into a regular officer, manager or engineer role. In India the same idea goes by several names: Management Trainee (MT) and Probationary Officer (PO) at banks, Graduate Trainee (GT) at banks and finance firms, and Graduate Engineer Trainee (GET) or Executive Trainee at PSUs and core engineering companies.

The tables below compare the programmes covered on this site. Unless a row says otherwise, figures are candidate-reported (placement-cell notices, job posts and student reports, as of August 2026), not official offers. Always check the current notification or offer letter.

Bonds and service agreements

Only two programmes on this site have a reported bond amount:

  • SBI PO: widely cited ₹2 lakh bond to serve at least 3 years from joining
  • LTTS GET: about ₹2 lakh for 2 years 9 months

IOCL says the exact years and penalty are in the notification, BHEL says a bond is not universal, and Bank of Baroda’s academy programmes come with their own fee, stipend and bond. For every other programme, read the offer letter or notification before you accept.

How to prepare for a trainee programme

  • Bank PO / MT: practise the bank exam pattern (prelims and mains), banking awareness and current affairs, and prepare for a group exercise and interview. See the SBI hub.
  • PSU GET: your GATE score decides the shortlist, so GATE preparation comes first. Then prepare your core subject for the interview and practise group discussions.
  • Private GET: prepare aptitude and core engineering for the online test, and your final-year project for the technical interview.
  • All programmes: prepare the HR questions in the interview preparation guide, and check CGPA requirements before applying.

Frequently asked questions

What is a management trainee programme?

A management trainee (MT) programme is an entry-level job where a fresher is hired as a trainee, rotates through training or functions for a fixed period, and is then confirmed into a regular role. Banks call similar roles Probationary Officer or Graduate Trainee, and engineering companies and PSUs call them Graduate Engineer Trainee (GET) or Executive Trainee.

What is the difference between a management trainee and a graduate engineer trainee?

Management trainee and probationary officer roles at banks usually accept graduates from any discipline or MBAs and lead to officer or manager roles. Graduate Engineer Trainee (GET) and Executive Trainee roles at PSUs and core companies need a B.E./B.Tech in the notified branch and lead to engineering roles; PSUs usually shortlist on the GATE score.

Do management trainee programmes have a bond?

Some do. The SBI hub cites a widely reported ₹2 lakh bond to serve at least 3 years, and the LTTS hub cites about ₹2 lakh for 2 years 9 months. Most other companies on this site say the bond is set in the offer or notification, so read that document before accepting.

Which trainee programmes pay the most for freshers?

On this site’s figures, PSU trainee roles such as ONGC (about ₹20-26 lakh CTC in recent official-style ads) and IOCL (about ₹16-17.3 LPA) sit at the top, along with SBI PO (CTC cited around ₹21.97 lakh at the Mumbai centre). Private bank MT and GT roles are commonly reported between ₹4 and ₹10 LPA.
