IOCL is a PSU, not a campus IT services drive with a 6.0 CGPA blog number. Eligibility lives in the advertisement PDF on iocl.com. Treat everything below as a working map from recent ads and student reports (as of August 2026). Your PDF wins.
65% (UR/EWS/OBC-NCL) / 55% (SC/ST/PwBD) is the commonly cited minimum on recent Engineer/Officer ads - higher than some PSUs that sit at 60%. It is a filter, not a selection guarantee. GATE rank (or CBT score) decides the shortlist.
Full-time regular degrees only. Part-time, correspondence, distance, and online modes are typically ineligible.
GATE: For Grade A engineering cycles you usually need a valid GATE score in the same discipline as your degree. IOCL often accepts the current year and sometimes previous years - the PDF states the window. There is no published minimum GATE mark; shortlisting is merit + vacancy.
Age: Often 26 years for UR/EWS as on the date in the ad, with OBC/SC/ST/PwBD/Ex-servicemen relaxations.
| Route | Who it is for | Written filter | What stays the same |
|---|---|---|---|
| GATE Engineer/Officer (Grade A) | B.E./B.Tech listed branches | GATE score shortlist | GD/GT + PI |
| E0 Junior Engineer/Officer | 3-year diploma | IOCL CBT | GD/GT + PI |
| Other officer ads | MBA, Law, M.Sc Chemistry, etc. | As per that PDF | Still official PSU process |
Do not mix tracks. A CS student with no GATE CS paper cannot “just give the Mechanical CBT.”
| Item | Typical expectation (recent ads / reports) | Reality check |
|---|---|---|
| Marks | 65% UR/EWS/OBC; 55% SC/ST/PwBD | Some ads say “as per GATE/notification” |
| Degree | Full-time B.E./B.Tech (Grade A) or diploma (E0) | Distance/part-time usually out |
| Disciplines | Chem, Mech, Elec, Civil, Inst, Met, CS/IT, ECE when listed | Year-dependent |
| GATE | Matching paper, valid year(s) | No single cutoff mark |
| Age | ~26 UR as on ad date | Relaxations apply |
| Backlogs | Must meet % with all semesters as defined | Active backlog at joining is risky |
| Bond | Training/service clause common | Read the PDF |

Skills they actually filter
First filter: GATE paper or campus CBT
GD: Structure, not volume
PI: Core branch + plant / role fit + Why IOCL
Coding: Not the Grade A bar
| Position | Rough chances | Reality check |
|---|---|---|
| Just above 65% with average GATE | Low | Vacancies are small vs applicant volume |
| Strong GATE in a listed paper | High shortlist odds | GD/PI still matter |
| CBT just above sectional cutoff | Borderline | Overall % and category list decide |
| Below printed % or wrong paper code | Out | Do not apply “for luck” |

Previous year question papers
IOCL does not leak a permanent “placement paper.” What students download are GATE previous papers, CBT-style aptitude + domain MCQs, and GD/PI prompts. On this site these are pattern trainers.
| Stage | What to practice |
|---|---|
| GATE | Official IIT GATE papers in your code (ME, CH, EE, CS, …) |
| CBT | 50 domain + 20 quant + 15 LR + 15 verbal under cutoffs |
| GD/GT | Structured speaking on energy, economy, safety |
| PI | Core viva + Why IOCL + posting flexibility |
| Theme you saw | What to drill next | Why IOCL asks it |
|---|---|---|
| Heat exchangers / distillation (CH) | GATE CH previous | Refinery core |
| SOM / thermo / machines (ME) | GATE ME PYQs | Plant engineering |
| Power systems / machines (EE) | GATE EE PYQs | Electrical posts |
| Quant DI + time-work | 20-Q timed sets | CBT Section B |
| Energy transition GD | 5 talking points | GD/GT |
| Safety incident PI | STAR + procedure | PSU culture |
2025 sets often drill “40% sectional in Part A.” Do not leave domain blank to chase verbal. Memorising one PDF’s Q12 does not help.
Free practice packs. Full archive: previous year question papers.
IOCL hires through iocl.com advertisements, not a year-round HackerRank portal. Campus “IOCL placement” at some colleges is usually awareness + GATE counselling, not a private OA. If a senior says “IOCL took a written test in our auditorium,” check the year and the post - they may have sat a CBT centre that happened to be nearby, not a college-owned paper. The national advertisement still owns eligibility, vacancies, and the merit list. Coaching-centre “IOCL batches” cannot shortlist you. Only the application number on iocl.com and the GATE/CBT hall ticket do. Screenshot both the day you submit.
Gate + IOCL form
Qualify GATE in the listed paper, then fill the IOCL application when the ad opens. Shortlist from GATE merit.
Direct cbt ads
E0 and some officer posts: apply, sit CBT, then GD/GT/PI if you clear cutoffs.
Campus cells
Some colleges host talks. Selection still follows the national notification, not a college OA.
Download the PDF. Tick discipline, %, age, GATE year, medical standards, and bond. Wrong paper code = wasted fee.
No extra “coding round.” Your GATE score is the written exam. Cutoffs move with vacancies and paper difficulty. CS/IT, when open, is a small list.
Official Grade E0-style structure students should memorise until the new PDF says otherwise:
| Section | Questions | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| A Domain knowledge | 50 | Your diploma/degree branch |
| B Quantitative | 20 | Arithmetic, DI |
| B Logical reasoning | 15 | Puzzles, series |
| B Verbal | 15 | Grammar, RC |
| Total | 100 | Duration & negative marking in ad |
Cited ads have used sectional + overall qualifiers (example: UR/EWS/OBC-NCL 40% in A, 40% in B, 45% overall). SC/ST/PwBD lower. Qualifying CBT ≠ interview call - shortlist is from marks and vacancies.
Student tip: Attempt domain first if that is your strength; do not donate Section A to chase verbal.
Deeper notes: IOCL Online Assessment.
Negative marking: many PSU CBTs penalise wrong answers (0.25 is a figure that shows up in commentary around some ads). The PDF is binding. A wild guess on a 50-50 verbal item can pull you under a sectional cutoff you otherwise met. If you cannot eliminate an option, skip.
Category cutoffs are not rumours. Cited E0-style ads used different floors for UR/EWS/OBC-NCL vs SC/ST/PwBD. Do not apply a friend’s “I cleared at 42%” story to your category or a different year’s paper. Compute your mock % the same way the ad defines Section A vs B.
PSU panels watch whether you listen, add a fact, and do not shout. Topics: fuel pricing, ethanol blending, energy security, workplace safety, “privatization of PSUs.” A Group Task may be a case or a physical/problem exercise depending on the centre.
Prep: 2-minute opening with one number (IOCL refining capacity order-of-magnitude, or a current policy) + one balanced close. Do not recite Wikipedia.
Core subject viva (heat transfer, machines, networks - your branch), B.Tech/diploma project, Why IOCL vs ONGC/BPCL, willingness to work in a refinery township or marketing location, integrity (backlogs, gap years). CS candidates, if called, still need oil-sector awareness plus their CS GATE topics - this is not a FAANG loop.
| # | Round | What they check |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | GATE or CBT | Written merit + cutoffs |
| 2 | GD/GT | Communication, teamwork, awareness |
| 3 | PI | Technical depth + PSU fit |
| Phase | Typical duration | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ad → apply | 2-4 weeks window | Do not wait for the last day |
| GATE result / CBT | As per calendar | GATE often March; CBT later |
| GD/PI | Weeks to months after shortlist | City listed in call letter |
| Medical + joining | After merit list | Fitness standards apply |
| End to end | Many months | Not a 2-week IT campus loop |
| Component | Focus | Prep move this week |
|---|---|---|
| GATE paper | Full syllabus PYQs | One subject test |
| CBT domain 50 | Branch MCQs | 25 mixed Q timed |
| CBT aptitude 50 | Speed + cutoff | Mock quiz |
| GD | Structure + facts | One recorded 2-min talk |
| PI | Project + core | One diagram from memory |

If a IOCL invite is 3-8 weeks out, treat this hub as the map and the linked practice pages as the drills. Do not reread eligibility ten times. Check the JD once, then spend hours on the filter that actually rejects people.
Typical fresher CTC chatter for IOCL sits around ₹16-17.3 LPA (candidate-reported - confirm the letter). Languages students mention most often: Java, C. Pick one and stay with it in OA and interviews.
Eligibility reminder (from student reports): IOCL Engineer/Officer (Grade A) eligibility is notification-specific. Commonly: full-time B.E./B.Tech in a listed discipline (Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, CS/IT, ECE, Instrumentation, Metallurgy, etc.), often 65% for UR/EWS/OBC-NCL and 55% for SC/ST/PwBD, age about 26 for UR (relaxations apply), and a valid GATE score in the matching paper for GATE-based cycles. Diploma E0 posts differ. Always download th.
What you are training for: After the written filter (GATE shortlist or CBT), most ads run Group Discussion and/or Group Task plus Personal Interview. That is typically 2-3 stages after the exam, not a private IT coding loop. Count the notification.
Short version of the prep split: If the ad is GATE-based: treat GATE as 80% of prep (your branch paper), then 20% GD/GT + PI (oil-sector awareness, projects, HR). If the ad is CBT: 50% domain MCQs + 50% aptitude (quant, LR, verbal) under the published sectional cutoffs. Download the exact PDF first.
Week 1 - pattern, not vibes. Language fluency: rewrite 10 old solutions in one language until you stop hunting syntax. Open the IOCL previous-year sets on this site and mark which sections ate your time. Write the timing on a sticky note. That number is more useful than a 200-problem LeetCode streak you never timed.
Week 2 - the steep filter. Most IOCL drives fail people on the first timed paper or OA. Do three timed sits this week. After each one, log every miss in a two-column note: topic and why (slow, wrong formula, bad edge case, panic). The next sit should only add problems from that log.
Week 3 - talk tracks. Technical interviews at IOCL usually want a clean project story, one or two CS fundamentals, and (if the process has it) a behavioral or values round. Write STAR stories on paper, not in your head. Practise “Why IOCL?” with one concrete product, lab, or business line - not a slogan.
Week 4 - mocks and logistics. Sleep, id photocopies, and a dry run of the oa platform if the invite names one. If you still have energy, redo only the questions you failed in week 2.
| Slice | Share of weekly hours | What “done” looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Timed papers / OA | ~40% | You finish a IOCL-style sit without guessing the clock |
| Coding / role technical | ~30% | You can explain a solution out loud in your chosen language |
| Fundamentals / domain | ~20% | You can teach one OS/DBMS/networks (or domain) topic to a friend |
| Stories + HR | ~10% | Two STAR stories and a specific Why-this-company answer |
If you only have 10 days, keep the same ratios and cut volume, not the timed sits.
Use this hub for the IOCL story (eligibility, rounds, salary). Use those pages for timed reps and interview notes.
If you do one thing after reading this: schedule three timed IOCL papers on three different days, then interview prep on the leftovers.
A TCS/Infosys aptitude deck still helps the quant/logic slice of many IOCL papers, but do not assume the same cutoff culture. Read the process section on this page once, then swap in IOCL-specific coding or domain drills from the nested banks. Shared prep is fine; shared assumptions about rounds are not.
Days 1-3: one timed IOCL paper each day plus error log. Days 4-6: only the topics you missed, plus 4-6 coding problems in one language. Days 7-8: project + STAR + Why IOCL. Day 9: one more full mock. Day 10: light review and sleep. This is worse than four weeks, but it beats rereading notes the night before.
Know your project at the level of what broke and what you changed, not only the tech list on the resume. For IOCL, interviewers often poke the same hole the OA already tested - be ready to re-solve a warm question on a shared editor or whiteboard. If you used AI to draft code while practising, you still need to type it yourself on the day.
A single note with date, paper name, score/time, and three misses is enough. If you cannot name your last three IOCL mistakes, you are collecting content, not preparing.
Figures are from recent ads and candidate/institute write-ups (as of August 2026). Appointment letter + DPE pay revision rules win.
| Band | Pay / CTC (reported) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Engineer/Officer Grade A | Basic ₹50,000 in ₹50,000-1,60,000; CTC often cited ~₹16-17.3 LPA | DA, HRA/housing, PRP, perks |
| This hub’s older student band | ₹12-16 LPA | Use as a floor-ish chatter band |
| Grade E0 JE/JO | Basic often ₹30,000-1,20,000 | Diploma track |
| GAE / apprentice | Stipend (e.g. ₹60,000/month cited in some cycles) | Not the same as Grade A |
Confirm posting-related HRA vs township housing, medical, and PRP. Do not compare PSU CTC 1:1 with private IT variable pay.
Know basic ₹50,000 Grade A and that CTC includes allowances. Asking only “package?” without knowing DA/HRA looks unprepared. Ask about training location and probation.
Usually: apply on the official ad → GATE shortlist (Grade A) or CBT (E0/some posts) → GD/GT → Personal Interview → medical → joining. This is not Online Test → Technical → HR like a private IT campus.
Typically GD/GT + PI. Some years weight them in a published formula. Count the PDF.
Yes. Pattern trainers for 2024-2026 are on this site. Use official GATE PYQs for the real technical paper. Start with the 2026 PDF or the archive.
Cited Grade E0 ads: 100 MCQs - 50 domain, 20 quant, 15 LR, 15 verbal - with sectional and overall category cutoffs. Duration and negative marking are in the ad.
Full-time B.E./B.Tech in a listed branch, often 65%/55%, age ~26 UR, matching GATE paper when required. Diploma E0 is a different table. Your PDF overrides this page.
Grade A basic ₹50,000; CTC often discussed around ₹16-17 LPA. This hub also cites a student-reported ₹12-16 LPA band. E0 is lower. Appointment letter wins.
No. Refineries and marketing locations are pan-India. PI will ask if you will join a remote township. Answer honestly.
GATE or CBT first, then GD/PI. Details: preparation guide.
Not for core Mechanical/Chemical officers. CS/IT candidates follow GATE CS, not a HackerRank OA. Do not prep Java “because the template said so.”
Only if the year’s ad lists CS/IT and you have the matching GATE paper (typically). Seats are limited.
Downstream (IOCL/BPCL) vs upstream (ONGC). Compare cutoff, posting, and bond. See BPCL and ONGC.
Often yes for officer-trainee cycles. Years and penalty are in the current PDF only.
Read this year’s PDF before coaching. Respect sectional CBT cutoffs. Practise GD weekly. Know what downstream refining/marketing actually does.
IOCL interview experience and the official advertisement PDF linked from iocl.com.
Patterns below mix official ad language and candidate-reported PSU panels. Your call letter wins.
Selection = CBT + GD/GT + PI. CBT: 100 objective questions, domain/aptitude split, category-wise sectional cutoffs. Shortlist for GD/GT/PI from CBT marks. Qualifying the CBT alone does not guarantee an interview. That is the most important process fact on this hub.
Students describe a formal panel: core questions from the final-year project and 2-3 GATE-ish topics, then Why PSU, Why oil, hometown vs All-India posting. GD rewards people who add one fact and let others speak. Shouting “I agree with everyone” for 8 minutes is a reject.
What hurt candidates: wrong GATE paper; leaving domain blank on CBT; no idea of a refinery vs a petrol pump; arguing in GD; lying about backlogs; treating IOCL like a Bengaluru SDE job.
Takeaway: the written filter is merciless; the panel still expects an adult who will live in a township and talk safety without memes.
More notes: IOCL interview experience.
Answer out loud. Coaching-app “HR answers” sound fake in a five-person panel.
If you make the merit list:
PSU joining is slow compared with IT campus. Plan final-year exams and travel around the call letter, not around Telegram rumours.
| Block | Action |
|---|---|
| Domain 50 | Attempt all you know; do not leave the section below cutoff |
| Quant 20 | Bank arithmetic and one DI set |
| LR 15 | Skip the ego puzzle; return if time |
| Verbal 15 | Usually faster - do not let it steal domain minutes |
| Last 5 min | Check unmarked questions; respect negative marking |
Run this twice. Compute your sectional % every time. Overall 50% with 30% in domain still fails many cited ads.
If you are sitting GATE 2026 for Grade A, your “placement season” is the GATE calendar plus the IOCL form window - not July campus week. If you are sitting E0 CBT, download that PDF the day it drops and ignore GATE-only Telegram advice. Mixing the two is how people miss fees and paper codes.
