| Route | Shortlist basis | Marks floor students cite | Next stages |
|---|---|---|---|
| GATE (open) | Current-year GATE score in matching paper | Often 60% in B.E./B.Tech (50% SC/ST/PwBD) | GD/GT → PI → medical (written only if the ad says so) |
| Campus (select IIT/NIT) | CGPA / aggregate as per MoU | Some reports ~7.0 / 70% UR | Case/GD → PI → medical |
| Other ads | Whatever the PDF prints | Diploma, non-management, etc. | Do not mix with MT prep |
The GATE score is typically shortlisting only. Once you are in GD/PI, panels decide on communication and technical depth - last year’s 82 GATE will not carry a weak interview.
Current-year GATE only: students and explainer sites repeat that a 2024 or 2025 score is not valid for a 2026 GATE-route BPCL ad. That is different from some academic uses of GATE. If you skipped GATE 2026, you wait for the next cycle unless a campus route opens.
Is 60% enough? It is the commonly cited eligibility floor for UR/OBC/EWS on the GATE route - not a selection rank. Shortlists still sort on GATE. A 61% with a strong CH paper beats an 82% who never registered for GATE.
Branches (check the PDF every year):
| Discipline (when advertised) | Typical degree titles | Typical GATE paper |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical | Chemical Engineering | CH |
| Mechanical | Mechanical / sometimes Production or Automobile if listed | ME (or XE if the ad allows) |
| Electrical | Electrical / EEE if listed | EE |
| Instrumentation | Instrumentation / E&I if listed | IN |
| Civil | Civil | CE |
| Computer Science | CS / IT / MCA if listed | CS |
Notifications often exclude lookalike degrees (certain petrochemical, polymer, or mechanical specialisations). If your marksheet title is not in the list, do not argue with a blog.
Age: many MT ads use ~25 years UR with OBC/SC/ST relaxations. Campus routes sometimes quote ~27. Count your date of birth against the PDF, not a memory of last year.
Backlogs and nationality: no active backlogs at joining is the usual PSU bar. Indian nationals only on standard ads. Full-time regular degrees - part-time paths are not the MT story here.
What helps besides GATE: a plant internship or B.Tech project you can explain in unit-operation language; a clean GATE scorecard; willingness to work shifts. Certificates are optional. See certifications after core GATE prep, not instead of it.

GATE route marks: ~60% (50% reserved) as commonly advertised
Degree: Full-time B.E./B.Tech in notified branch

What they actually filter
Primary: GATE technical depth in Chem/Mech (or listed branch)
Then: GD listening + PI core subjects
Not the filter: LeetCode contests
Final gate: Medical + documents
Good fit: You already treat GATE as your year-defining exam, you can talk distillation or heat transfer (Chem) / SOM or thermo (Mech) without a script, and you are open to a refinery township. Internships at plants help the PI; they do not replace GATE.
Harder path: You only practised coding OAs; you refuse any posting outside a metro IT park; you hope last year’s GATE will be accepted; you dominate GD and talk over quieter candidates.
CGPA myth: A high CGPA without GATE does nothing on the open MT route. A modest CGPA above 60% with a competitive GATE is the actual game.

Previous year question papers
BPCL does not sell a permanent “placement paper” the way IT majors recycle aptitude PDFs. Useful practice is GATE previous papers in your discipline plus GD topics and PI question banks that match oil PSU interviews. this site packs are pattern trainers - not leaked live BPCL scripts.
| Stage | What to practice |
|---|---|
| GATE (the real written) | Full-length CH/ME/EE/… papers under official GATE timing |
| Optional CBT (if the ad adds one) | Domain MCQs + aptitude as in older oil-PSU patterns |
| GD / group task | Energy, safety, environment, economy - 8-12 minutes |
| PI | Core GATE subjects + BPCL/refinery awareness + HR |
| Medical / docs | Not a paper - a checklist |
| Theme | What to drill next | Why BPCL asks it |
|---|---|---|
| Mass/energy balance (CH) | Unsteady vs steady; recycle | Crude units live on balances |
| Distillation / HT (CH) | McCabe-Thiele intuition, HT correlations | CDU/VDU conversations in PI |
| Thermo / SOM / FM (ME) | First-law traps, stress-strain, pumps | Rotating equipment and utilities |
| Aptitude (if CBT exists) | Percentages, DI, time-work | Speed, not CAT-level puzzles |
| GD | Counter-argument without insult | Plant teamwork |
| PI HR | Posting, bond, long-term PSU career | Mobility filter |
2025 packs often drill “GATE-style heat transfer.” Own the concept, then drill a related numerical. Memorising one PDF numerical does not survive a PI follow-up.
Pair them with official GATE papers.
BPCL hires freshers mainly through GATE-linked advertisements on bharatpetroleum.in, plus select campus programmes. This is not an IT services walk-in. After the score filter, you talk - then a doctor signs off.
Gate / careers portal
Register for GATE in the matching paper, then apply on bharatpetroleum.in when the MT ad opens. Unique application ID - no hard-copy chase unless asked.
Campus recruitment
Select IIT/NIT (and similar) MoUs: CGPA shortlist, then GD/PI. Same posting and medical reality.
Other notifications
Diploma / non-management / experienced posts are separate. Do not mix eligibility with MT.
Read branch list, GATE paper code, marks, age, and whether a written test exists. Upload a consistent GATE registration number. Category certificates must match the format in the ad. This stage rejects more people than students admit - wrong paper code, expired GATE year, or a degree title not in the annex.
For most engineering MT cycles, GATE is the written test. BPCL shortlists proportionally to vacancies. Chemical and Mechanical see the deepest piles.
There is no single public cutoff. Planning numbers students use: aim 65+ GATE marks for a safer Chem/Mech conversation in normal years; 70+ if rumours say vacancies are thin. Reserved-category cutoffs run lower. Treat these as study targets, not promises.
If a given year adds a CBT after GATE, expect domain + aptitude MCQs. Prep that only if your PDF says so. Default energy stays on GATE.
| Item | From student reports / recent ads |
|---|---|
| Platform | GATE (official CBT) + BPCL application portal |
| Extra written | Only if the advertisement inserts one |
| Languages | Not a coding OA for core GET/MT |
| What to carry | GATE admit/score discipline - paper code must match |
Deeper notes: BPCL online assessment (use it as a GATE/CBT map, not a LeetCode page).
8-12 candidates, one topic, one observer. Oil PSU GDs reward:
Topics that keep returning: energy security vs transition, plastic recycling, work from plant vs hybrid IT culture (trap: do not trash plants), women in core engineering, subsidy vs targeted DBT for LPG.
Fail modes: shouting, fake statistics, ignoring the task if it is a group problem (design a safety briefing) instead of a debate.
Usually a mixed panel: technical + HR. Structure many candidates report:
Chem example follow-ups: relative volatility, flooding in a packed column, H2S safety.
Mech example follow-ups: NPSH, vibration basics, heat exchanger fouling.
EE/IN: protection, control loops, SIL if you claimed it.
About psychometric tests: some cycles share personality mapping with the panel. Answer consistently; it is not a puzzle contest.
Colour vision, chronic illness, and physical standards are specified in the ad. Keep originals of degree, GATE scorecard, and category docs. An offer is not joining until medical and verification clear.
| # | Stage | What they check |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | GATE (+ optional CBT) | Technical rank vs vacancies |
| 2 | GD / Group Task | Communication, teamwork |
| 3 | Personal Interview | Core engineering + mobility + integrity |
| 4 | Medical + DV | Fitness and paperwork |
| Phase | Typical duration | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| GATE exam | As per GATE calendar | Register months ahead |
| BPCL application window | Few weeks when the ad is live | Do not wait for the last day |
| Shortlist → GD/PI | Weeks to a couple of months | Batch-wise city calls |
| Medical / offer | After PI merit | Joining can be later than IT PPOs |
| End to end after GATE | Often 2-4+ months | Slower than a 2-week product OA loop |
| Component | Focus | Prep move this week |
|---|---|---|
| GATE mock | Full paper, official time | One timed mock + error log |
| Weak chapter | Highest-weight GATE topics | 10 numericals + 1 board explanation |
| GD | Listen + one fact | One recorded group of 6 |
| PI technical | Favourite + neglected subject | 30-minute oral with a friend |
| PI HR | Posting, Why BPCL | 90-second honest answer |
| Aptitude | Only if CBT is in the ad | Mock quiz |

If a BPCL invite is 3-8 weeks out, treat this hub as the map and the linked practice pages as the drills. Do not reread eligibility ten times. Check the JD once, then spend hours on the filter that actually rejects people.
Typical fresher CTC chatter for BPCL sits around ₹12-16 LPA (candidate-reported - confirm the letter). Languages students mention most often: Java, C, Go. Pick one and stay with it in OA and interviews.
Eligibility reminder (from student reports): BPCL Management Trainee / GET-style hiring is advertisement-specific. The common GATE route (candidate-reported / recent ads): full-time B.E./B.Tech in the notified branch (often Chemical or Mechanical; some years also Electrical, Instrumentation, Civil, CS) with typically 60% aggregate for UR/OBC/EWS (50% SC/ST/PwBD), age limit as per ad (often ~25 UR with relaxations), Indian nationals, no active backlogs at joinin.
What you are training for: Typical GATE-route MT process: apply on the BPCL portal with a valid current-year GATE score → shortlist on GATE → Group Discussion or Group Task → Personal Interview (technical + HR) → pre-employment medical. Some advertisements insert a written/CBT after GATE; many recent engineering MT cycles treat GATE as the written test. Campus routes skip GATE and start from CGPA shortlist + GD/PI. Final joining depends on medical fitness and document verification.
Short version of the prep split: If you are on the GATE route: 70% current-year GATE technical in your paper (CH/ME/EE/IN/CE/CS as notified), 15% GD/group task (listen, build on others, oil/energy current affairs), 10% PI (core engineering + Why BPCL + posting mobility), 5% medical/document hygiene. Do not prep like a TCS coding drive. Campus-route students swap GATE time for CGPA-shortlist academics plus the same GD/PI.
Week 1 - pattern, not vibes. Timed aptitude + one easy coding problem a day, plus a one-page cs fundamentals sheet. Open the BPCL previous-year sets on this site and mark which sections ate your time. Write the timing on a sticky note. That number is more useful than a 200-problem LeetCode streak you never timed.
Week 2 - the steep filter. Most BPCL drives fail people on the first timed paper or OA. Do three timed sits this week. After each one, log every miss in a two-column note: topic and why (slow, wrong formula, bad edge case, panic). The next sit should only add problems from that log.
Week 3 - talk tracks. Technical interviews at BPCL usually want a clean project story, one or two CS fundamentals, and (if the process has it) a behavioral or values round. Write STAR stories on paper, not in your head. Practise “Why BPCL?” with one concrete product, lab, or business line - not a slogan.
Week 4 - mocks and logistics. Two full mocks, then only error-log topics - no new patterns. If you still have energy, redo only the questions you failed in week 2.
| Slice | Share of weekly hours | What “done” looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Timed papers / OA | ~40% | You finish a BPCL-style sit without guessing the clock |
| Coding / role technical | ~30% | You can explain a solution out loud in your chosen language |
| Fundamentals / domain | ~20% | You can teach one OS/DBMS/networks (or domain) topic to a friend |
| Stories + HR | ~10% | Two STAR stories and a specific Why-this-company answer |
If you only have 10 days, keep the same ratios and cut volume, not the timed sits.
Use this hub for the BPCL story (eligibility, rounds, salary). Use those pages for timed reps and interview notes.
If you do one thing after reading this: schedule three timed BPCL papers on three different days, then interview prep on the leftovers.
Figures below are candidate-reported / ad-derived India bands (as of August 2026). PSU offers split basic, DA (IDA), HRA, and perks. Students usually quote a CTC-like total.
| Band | Typical number | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| MT / GET-style fresher (student CTC talk) | ₹12-16 LPA | Includes DA/HRA/perks as people roll them up |
| Advertised basic (varies by year) | Mid five-figure basic on IDA scales in older MT ads | Read the current PDF; do not quote 2017 numbers in HR |
| Diploma / non-management | Different NG-grade scales | Not this hub’s MT story |
Confirm the written offer and posting city. Kochi vs Mumbai HRA and township housing change take-home more than students expect. Do not quote a 2017 basic-pay screenshot in 2026 PI - IDA revisions and city class change the rupee story even when the grade name looks familiar.
Know the ₹12-16 LPA student-facing band, ask how basic vs DA vs HRA split, and ask about posting. Aggressive private-sector negotiation theatre lands poorly in a PSU panel.
Chemical (say these without a slide deck):
Mechanical:
If your paper is EE/IN/CE/CS: pick five GATE-favourite numericals and one “plant implication” sentence each. Panels punish textbook-only answers that never touch a unit.
Topic: “India should ban ICE vehicles by 2035.”
A usable shape:
Fail: fake 87.3% statistics, interrupting twice, or turning it into a climate speech with no energy-system constraint.
Students over-index on “cutoff PDF from 2019.” BPCL shortlists relative to vacancies and the year’s score distribution. A 64 might call in a fat-vacancy Mechanical year and miss in a thin Chemical year. Your controllable is the mock average this month, not a spreadsheet of rumours. Log three full-length papers and the topic of every silly mistake - unit conversion, sign error, unread last line. Those three categories are cheaper to fix than “I need 15 more marks of new syllabus.”
Typical GATE-route MT path: apply with a current-year GATE score → shortlist → GD/Group Task → Personal Interview → medical. Some ads insert a written/CBT; many engineering cycles treat GATE as the written test. Campus routes start from CGPA shortlist. Confirm the PDF.
After GATE, most reports describe GD + PI, then medical. That is two people-rounds, not a 4-round HackerRank loop. Count the advertisement.
Yes. Free BPCL placement papers PDF and 2024-2026 style GATE/GD/PI practice are on this site. Pair them with official GATE papers. No registration for the main downloads. Start with the 2026 PDF or the archive.
Core MT/GET hiring is GATE + GD + PI. CS posts, when listed, still usually ride GATE CS. Only prep a coding OA if your specific mailer says so.
Advertisement-specific. GATE route commonly: full-time B.E./B.Tech in the listed branch, ~60% UR (50% reserved), current-year GATE in the matching paper, age as per ad, Indian national, no active backlogs at joining. Campus routes may list ~70%/7.0. The PDF overrides this page.
For the open engineering MT route, yes in recent cycles - current year only. Campus or MBA/CA routes, when advertised, are different. A leftover 2024 score is usually useless for a 2026 GATE ad.
Candidate-reported CTC-style totals often land around ₹12-16 LPA (as of August 2026) for MT/GET talk, with IDA basic + DA + HRA underneath. Confirm the letter and city.
Willingness for refinery and marketing postings (Mumbai, Kochi, other sites, pan-India) is a real filter. Say so early if you cannot move.
GATE route: ~70% current-year GATE, 15% GD, 10% PI, 5% docs/medical. Do not copy an IT coding plan. Details: preparation guide.
Chem and Mech most often; EE, IN, Civil, CS in some ads. Degree titles must match the annex. Lookalike petrochemical or specialised mechanical degrees are often excluded.
No official public cutoff. Students use 65+ as a planning zone and 70+ in tight Chem/Mech years. Reserved-category shortlists run lower. Vacancies change everything.
Same sport: GATE, GD/PI, medical, oil downstream. Vacancy mix, cutoffs, and campus vs GATE balance differ by year. CTC bands overlap. Choose on discipline vacancies and posting, not logo.
Treat this year’s GATE paper as the written test. Then rehearse GD without dominating, and a PI story that names a unit operation you actually understand.
Start with BPCL interview experience on this site, then official ads and recent GATE-PSU write-ups. Patterns shift - use them as maps.
Some PSU ads include service conditions or notice rules. Read the current PDF. Do not assume IOCL’s bond text equals BPCL’s. Ask in PI only after you have read the annex.
Yes if both ads accept that year’s paper and your discipline is listed in both. Processes and GD/PI dates are independent. Do not recycle a BPCL-only Why for IOCL - panels can tell.
Oil-PSU write-ups across the three downstream majors rhyme: GATE score shock, GD process over speeches, PI that jumps to the neglected subject, medical last-mile. When you read an IOCL GD note about ethanol blending, you can reuse the habit (listen, one fact, invite), not the script. BPCL panels have heard the same memorised ethanol paragraph.
A 70+ planning number is a study target. It is not a promise. Reserved-category cutoffs, vacancy spikes, and paper difficulty move the line. If your mock mean is 58 two months out, the fix is error-log discipline, not a WhatsApp cutoff screenshot from a senior who wrote a different paper.
GATE paper code mismatch vs application, expired OBC-NCL, degree title not in the annex (the “my branch is basically mechanical” argument), and medical surprises. Build the folder the week you apply, not the night before PI travel.
Public BPCL MT write-ups are thinner than IT GfG threads. Patterns that keep showing up across oil-PSU cycles (treat as colour, not a script):
GATE shortlist shock: students with “good CGPA, average GATE” miss the call; students with “okay CGPA, strong CH/ME” get GD dates. The first filter is the score, not the college brand, on the open route.
GD: a 2024-2025 style topic set - energy transition, safety after a refinery incident in the news, ethanol blending. Selects describe adding one precise point and inviting a quiet teammate as what observers liked. Rejects describe speeches.
PI: panels jumping from a favourite subject to a neglected one; asking for a sketch; probing whether the candidate would join a township posting if an IT PPO existed. Honesty about a competing offer is safer than pretending BPCL is the only application.
Medical: occasional last-mile drops on vision or undisclosed conditions. Read the annex.
Takeaway for juniors: put 2026 GATE first, then speaking skills. Do not build a “BPCL coding sheet.” If your college gets a campus MT drive, still revise core engineering orally - the GD/PI bar does not become an aptitude mill.
More notes when they land: BPCL interview experience.
January: two full-length papers a week, error log every night, no GD theatre.
February week-of: sleep, admit card, nothing new.
March-April (typical application windows vary): submit BPCL the day the portal opens, then switch to oral GATE + GD.
If you invert this calendar - GD in January, GATE “later” - you are preparing for the wrong door.
