Numerical ability questions

Q1: Number digit sum

Problem: Sum of digits of a two-digit number is 9. If digits are reversed, number increases by 27. Original number?

Solution: 10a+b; a+b=9; 10b+a = 10a+b+27 → 9b−9a=27 → b−a=3. a+b=9, b−a=3 → b=6, a=3. Number = 36.

Answer: 36

Q2: Consecutive integers

Problem: If the sum of three consecutive integers is 72, what is the smallest of these integers?

Solution: Let the integers be x, x+1, and x+2.

x + (x+1) + (x+2) = 72 3x + 3 = 72 3x = 69 x = 23

So the integers are 23, 24, and 25.

Answer: 23

Q3: Percentage recover

Problem: If 30% of a number is 150, what is the number?

Solution: 0.3x = 150 → x = 150 / 0.3 = 500.

Answer: 500

Q4: SI three years

Problem: Find simple interest on ₹5000 at 8% per annum for 3 years.

Solution: SI = 5000 × 8 × 3 / 100 = ₹1200.

Problem: A town’s population is 20,000. It grows 10% yearly. Population after 2 years?

Solution: After 2 years: 20000 × 1.1 × 1.1 = 24200.

Q7: Chain rule copies

Problem: 8 printers print 800 pages in 4 hours. How many printers for 1200 pages in 3 hours?

Solution: Pages ∝ printers × time. 800/(8×4)=1200/(p×3) → 25 = 1200/(3p) → 75p=1200 → p=16.

Problem: Find the simple interest on ₹8000 at 10% per annum for 2 years.

Solution: SI = (P × R × T) / 100 = (8000 × 10 × 2) / 100 = ₹1600.

Problem: If two ratios are 3:5 and 5:7, what is the compound ratio?

Solution: Compound ratio = (3/5) × (5/7) = 3/7, written as 3:7.

Problem: Two numbers have HCF 12 and LCM 180. If one number is 36, find the other.

Solution: Product of numbers = HCF × LCM. 36 × other = 12 × 180 = 2160. Other = 2160 / 36 = 60.
