Problem: A boat’s speed in still water is 15 km/h and the stream is 3 km/h. How long to cover 36 km upstream?

Solution: Upstream speed = 15 − 3 = 12 km/h. Time = 36 / 12 = 3 hours.

Q2: Calendar day

Problem: If 1 January is a Friday, what day is 1 March of a non-leap year?

Solution: Jan 31 + Feb 28 = 59 days = 8 weeks + 3 days. Friday + 3 = Monday.

Q3: Net percent change

Problem: A number is increased by 20% and then decreased by 20%. What is the net percentage change?

Solution: Start with 100 → 120 → 96. Net change = 4% decrease. Formula: successive +a then −a gives −(a²/100)% = −4%.

Answer: 4% decrease

Q4: CI half yearly

Problem: CI on ₹8000 at 10% p.a. for 1 year compounded half-yearly?

Solution: Rate per half-year = 5%. Amount = 8000 × (1.05)² = 8000 × 1.1025 = 8820. CI = 820.

Q5: Three workers

Problem: A finishes work in 12 days, B in 15 days, and C in 20 days. Working together, how many days do they need?

Solution: Take total work = LCM(12,15,20) = 60 units. A = 5/day, B = 4/day, C = 3/day. Combined = 12 units/day. Time = 60/12 = 5 days.

Answer: 5 days

Q6: Cube surface

Problem: A cube has side 6 cm. What is its total surface area?

Solution: TSA = 6a² = 6 × 36 = 216 cm².

Q7: Chain rule copies

Problem: 8 printers print 800 pages in 4 hours. How many printers for 1200 pages in 3 hours?

Solution: Pages ∝ printers × time. 800/(8×4)=1200/(p×3) → 25 = 1200/(3p) → 75p=1200 → p=16.

Problem: A mixture has milk and water in the ratio 4:1. If 5 litres of water are added to 20 litres of mixture, what is the new milk:water ratio?

Problem: Find compound interest on ₹10,000 at 10% per annum for 2 years, compounded annually.

Solution: Amount = 10000 × (1.1)² = 10000 × 1.21 = ₹12,100. CI = 12100 − 10000 = ₹2100. (SI for same period would be ₹2000; the extra ₹100 is interest on first-year interest.)
