Numerical ability questions

Q1: Sum of naturals

Problem: What is the sum of the first 50 natural numbers?

Solution: Sum of first n naturals = n(n+1)/2. For n = 50: 50 × 51 / 2 = 1275.

Answer: 1275

Q2: SI three years

Problem: Find simple interest on ₹5000 at 8% per annum for 3 years.

Solution: SI = 5000 × 8 × 3 / 100 = ₹1200.

Answer: ₹1200

Q3: Relative speed trains

Problem: Two trains 120 m and 180 m long run at 40 and 50 km/h in opposite directions. Time to cross?

Solution: Relative speed = 90 km/h = 25 m/s. Distance = 300 m. Time = 12 s.

Answer: 12 seconds

Q4: Profit on a pen

Problem: If the cost price of a pen is ₹40 and it is sold at a 25% profit, what is the selling price?

Solution: Profit = 25% of 40 = ₹10. Selling price = 40 + 10 = ₹50.

Or SP = CP × 1.25 = 40 × 1.25 = ₹50.

Answer: ₹50

Q5: Distance from speed

Problem: A vehicle travels at 60 km/h for 2.5 hours. How far does it go?

Solution: Distance = speed × time = 60 × 2.5 = 150 km.

Answer: 150 km

Q6: Man days leftover

Problem: 15 men can do a job in 20 days. After 5 days, 5 men leave. How many more days to finish?

Solution: Work done in 5 days = 15×5 = 75 man-days. Total = 300. Left = 225. Remaining men = 10. Days = 225/10 = 22.5 days.

Answer: 22.5 days

Q7: Consecutive integers

Problem: If the sum of three consecutive integers is 72, what is the smallest of these integers?

Solution: Let the integers be x, x+1, and x+2.

x + (x+1) + (x+2) = 72 3x + 3 = 72 3x = 69 x = 23

So the integers are 23, 24, and 25.

Answer: 23

Q8: Loss to profit shift

Problem: An article sold at 10% loss would give 5% profit if sold for ₹60 more. Find the cost price.

Solution: 0.9P + 60 = 1.05P 60 = 0.15P P = 60 / 0.15 = ₹400.

Answer: ₹400

Q9: Average of averages

Problem: Average of 10 numbers is 25. Average of first 6 is 20. Average of last 4?

Solution: Total = 250. First 6 sum = 120. Last 4 sum = 130. Average = 130/4 = 32.5.

Answer: 32.5

Problem: A right triangle has legs 6 and 8. Hypotenuse?

Solution: √(36+64)=√100=10.

Answer: 10

Q11: Error spotting tense

Problem: Identify the error: He go to school yesterday.

Solution: Past time marker needs past tense: went.

Answer: go → went

Problem: Choose the best antonym of ‘scarce’.

Solution: ‘Scarce’ means in short supply. Opposite: abundant.

Answer: Abundant

Q13: Error spotting

Problem: Spot the error: ‘Neither of the boys have submitted their assignment.’

Solution: ‘Neither’ is singular, so the verb should be ‘has’ (and ideally ‘his’ / ‘their’ per style guide). Correct: Neither of the boys has submitted his assignment.

Q14: Synonym - abundant

Problem: Choose the best synonym of ‘abundant’.

Solution: ‘Abundant’ means present in large quantity. Closest match: plentiful.

Answer: Plentiful

Solution: ‘Honest’ begins with vowel sound → an.

Reasoning ability questions

Q17: Direction return

Problem: You walk 2 km east, 3 km south, 2 km west. How far from start?

Solution: East/west cancel; 3 km south from start.

Answer: 3 km south

Q18: Odd one out

Problem: Find the odd one out: 3, 5, 7, 9, 11

Solution: 3, 5, 7, and 11 are prime. 9 = 3×3 is composite, so it is the odd one out.

Answer: 9

Q19: Seating circular

Problem: Four people sit around a square table facing center. A sits opposite C. If B is left of A, who is right of C?

Solution: Opposite pairs A-C. B left of A means clockwise B. Right of C is B.

Answer: B

Q20: Blood relation

Problem: Pointing to a photograph, Ravi says, ‘She is the daughter of my mother’s only son.’ How is the girl related to Ravi?

Solution: Ravi’s mother’s only son is Ravi himself (assuming one son). The girl is therefore Ravi’s daughter.

Answer: Daughter

Q21: Odd one shapes

Problem: Odd one out: Circle, Square, Triangle, Cube

Solution: Cube is 3D; others are 2D shapes.

Answer: Cube

Q22: Direction turn

Problem: A person walks 5 km north, then 3 km east, then 5 km south. How far is he from the start, and in which direction?

Solution: North 5 and south 5 cancel. He is 3 km east of the start.

Answer: 3 km east

Timed practice tips for VMware

  2. Mark and skip time sinks early
  3. Keep verbal accuracy high - these are easy marks if you stay calm
