Numerical ability questions

Q1: Average speed

Problem: A person covers a distance at 60 km/h and returns at 40 km/h. What is the average speed for the whole trip?

Solution: For equal distances, average speed = 2ab/(a+b). = 2×60×40 / (60+40) = 4800/100 = 48 km/h.

Do not take the arithmetic mean (50); that would be wrong here.

Answer: 48 km/h

Q2: Time and distance chase

Problem: A is 100 m ahead of B. A runs at 8 m/s and B at 10 m/s. How long until B catches A?

Solution: Relative speed = 2 m/s. Time = 100/2 = 50 seconds.

Answer: 50 seconds

Q3: Chain rule copies

Problem: 8 printers print 800 pages in 4 hours. How many printers for 1200 pages in 3 hours?

Solution: Pages ∝ printers × time. 800/(8×4)=1200/(p×3) → 25 = 1200/(3p) → 75p=1200 → p=16.

Answer: 16

Q4: Mixture milk

Problem: A mixture has milk and water in the ratio 4:1. If 5 litres of water are added to 20 litres of mixture, what is the new milk:water ratio?

Solution: In 20 L: milk = 16 L, water = 4 L. After adding 5 L water: milk 16, water 9. Ratio = 16:9.

Answer: 16:9

Q5: Fraction simplify

Problem: Simplify: (3/4) ÷ (9/8) × (2/3).

Solution: (3/4) × (8/9) × (2/3) = (3×8×2)/(4×9×3) = 48/108 = 4/9.

Answer: 4/9

Q6: Loss to profit shift

Problem: An article sold at 10% loss would give 5% profit if sold for ₹60 more. Find the cost price.

Solution: 0.9P + 60 = 1.05P 60 = 0.15P P = 60 / 0.15 = ₹400.

Answer: ₹400

Q7: Algebra ages

Problem: Father is 3 times as old as son. After 12 years he will be twice as old. Son’s present age?

Solution: 3x + 12 = 2(x + 12) → 3x + 12 = 2x + 24 → x = 12.

Answer: 12 years

Q8: Average after replace

Problem: The average of five numbers is 20. One number 30 is replaced by 10. What is the new average?

Solution: Old sum = 5 × 20 = 100. New sum = 100 − 30 + 10 = 80. New average = 80 / 5 = 16.

Answer: 16

Q9: Discount successive

Problem: Two successive discounts of 10% and 20% equal a single discount of?

Solution: Net multiplier = 0.9 × 0.8 = 0.72 → 28% single discount.

Answer: 28%

Q10: Marked price discount

Problem: A shopkeeper marks goods 20% above cost and then gives a 10% discount. What is the profit percentage?

Solution: Let CP = ₹100. Marked price = ₹120. Discount = 10% of 120 = ₹12. SP = 120 − 12 = ₹108. Profit % = 8%.

Answer: 8%

Timed practice tips for SAP

  1. First pass: only high-confidence questions
  2. Mark and skip time sinks early
  3. Keep verbal accuracy high - these are easy marks if you stay calm
  4. Run the mock quiz at least three times a week under real timing
  5. Sleep properly the night before; fatigue hurts DI and calculation accuracy
