Numerical ability questions

Problem: A finishes work in 12 days, B in 15 days, and C in 20 days. Working together, how many days do they need?
Solution: Take total work = LCM(12,15,20) = 60 units. A = 5/day, B = 4/day, C = 3/day. Combined = 12 units/day. Time = 60/12 = 5 days.
Answer: 5 days
Q2: Compound mark-discount
Problem: An article is marked 40% above cost and sold after a 10% discount. Find the profit percent.
Solution: SP = CP × 1.4 × 0.9 = 1.26 CP. Profit = 26%.
Answer: 26%
Q3: Permutation basic
Problem: In how many ways can 5 different books be arranged on a shelf?
Solution: Arrangements of 5 distinct items = 5! = 120.
Answer: 120
Q4: Discount successive
Problem: Two successive discounts of 10% and 20% equal a single discount of?
Solution: Net multiplier = 0.9 × 0.8 = 0.72 → 28% single discount.

Q5: Calendar day
Problem: If 1 January is a Friday, what day is 1 March of a non-leap year?
Solution: Jan 31 + Feb 28 = 59 days = 8 weeks + 3 days. Friday + 3 = Monday.

Q6: Train and pole
Problem: A train 150 meters long passes a pole in 15 seconds. What is its speed in km/h?
Solution: Distance = 150 m = 0.15 km. Time = 15 s = 15/3600 h = 1/240 h. Speed = 0.15 ÷ (1/240) = 0.15 × 240 = 36 km/h.
Faster check: 150/15 = 10 m/s → 10 × 18/5 = 36 km/h.

Problem: If 30% of a number is 150, what is the number?
Solution: 0.3x = 150 → x = 150 / 0.3 = 500.
Answer: 500

Problem: If two ratios are 3:5 and 5:7, what is the compound ratio?
Solution: Compound ratio = (3/5) × (5/7) = 3/7, written as 3:7.

Timed practice tips for EY
Section titled “Timed practice tips for EY”- First pass: only high-confidence questions
- Mark and skip time sinks early
- Keep verbal accuracy high - these are easy marks if you stay calm
- Run the mock quiz at least three times a week under real timing
- Sleep properly the night before; fatigue hurts DI and calculation accuracy
