NTPC Interview Experience 2025-2026 | Real Candidate Stories & Tips

Read authentic NTPC interview experiences from recent candidates 2025-2026. Round-by-round breakdown, questions asked, preparation tips, and strategies for NTPC placement.

NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) is India’s largest power generation company and a PSU. Recruitment is through a 90-minute written exam (technical discipline-specific + general aptitude, often with negative marking), technical interview, and HR round. The process typically takes 3–5 weeks. Eligibility is 65% / 6.5+ CGPA; Mechanical and Electrical are highly preferred. Freshers join as Executive Trainee (ET) with ₹7.2–12 LPA.

RoundDurationFocus Areas
Written Examination90 minTechnical (60–70 Q, discipline-specific: Mech/Electrical/Civil etc.), General Aptitude (30–40 Q). Power generation, thermal systems, engineering maths. Often 0.25 negative marking.
Technical Interview60 minCore engineering, power systems, thermal/hydro power, project discussion.
HR Round30 minMotivation for NTPC, interest in power sector, willingness to work at power plants, behavioral.

Experience 1: Executive Trainee (Mechanical) – Selected ✅

Section titled “Experience 1: Executive Trainee (Mechanical) – Selected ✅”

Date: October 2024 · Branch: Mechanical · Package: ₹7.2–12 LPA

Technical had thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and power plant engineering (boiler, turbine, Rankine cycle). A few questions on manufacturing and machine design. Aptitude had quant, reasoning, and verbal. I attempted technical first; negative marking meant I avoided blind guesses. Tip: Power generation and thermal systems are central; revise power plant engineering thoroughly.

Started with “Introduce yourself” and project discussion. Then: explain Rankine cycle with T-s diagram, types of boilers, difference between impulse and reaction turbine, and heat transfer in condensers. They asked why NTPC and if I’m willing to work at plant locations. Tip: Prepare “Why NTPC?” and show interest in power generation and operations.

Questions: Why NTPC? Interest in power generation? Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Willingness to work at power plants (sometimes remote sites)? Tip: Be clear on relocation; NTPC values commitment to the power sector.

Experience 2: ET (Electrical) – Selected ✅

Section titled “Experience 2: ET (Electrical) – Selected ✅”

Date: November 2024 · Branch: Electrical · Package: ₹7.2–12 LPA

Technical covered power systems, electrical machines, power electronics, transmission and distribution, and protection. A few questions on grid and renewable integration. Aptitude was moderate. Tip: Practice NTPC previous year papers; time management and accuracy matter with negative marking.

Project discussion, then: explain slip in induction motor, power factor improvement, protection schemes (overcurrent, differential), and basics of grid operation. They asked about my interest in thermal/hydro power. Tip: Link your project to power systems or industrial applications if possible.

Short: family background, why NTPC, knowledge of NTPC’s role (thermal, hydro, renewable), willingness to join as ET. Tip: Research NTPC’s capacity, plants, and recent initiatives (renewable, digital).

  • Mechanical: Thermodynamics, Rankine cycle, boilers, turbines, heat transfer, power plant engineering, fluid mechanics.
  • Electrical: Power systems, machines, protection, T&D, power factor, grid basics.
  • General: Power generation (thermal/hydro), plant operations, safety, engineering mathematics.
  • Why NTPC? Why power generation?
  • What do you know about NTPC’s role and plants?
  • Willingness to work at power plant locations?
  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
  • Teamwork / problem-solving example
