BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited) is a Maharatna PSU and India’s largest power generation equipment manufacturer. Recruitment is through a 90-minute written exam (technical subject-specific + general aptitude), followed by technical and HR rounds. The process typically takes 2–3 weeks. Eligibility is 65% / 6.5+ CGPA; preferred branches are Mechanical and Electrical. Freshers join as Graduate Engineer Trainee (GET) with ₹6–7.2 LPA.

RoundDurationFocus Areas
Written Examination90 minTechnical (40–45 Q, discipline-specific: Mech/Electrical/Electronics etc.), General Aptitude (20–25 Q). Core engineering and power generation basics.
Technical Interview60 minCore engineering subjects, power systems, project discussion, practical applications.
HR Round30 minMotivation for BHEL, interest in heavy engineering/power sector, career goals, behavioral.

Experience 1: Graduate Engineer Trainee (Mechanical) – Selected ✅

Section titled “Experience 1: Graduate Engineer Trainee (Mechanical) – Selected ✅”

Date: October 2024 · Branch: Mechanical · Package: ₹6–7.2 LPA

Technical section had thermodynamics, heat transfer, manufacturing, and machine design. A few questions were on power plant basics (boiler, turbine). Aptitude had quant, reasoning, and verbal. I attempted technical first and left enough time for aptitude. Tip: Technical carries more weight; power systems and your core subjects are critical.

Started with “Introduce yourself” and project discussion. Then: explain Rankine cycle, types of boilers, difference between impulse and reaction turbine, and a problem on heat transfer. They asked why I want to join BHEL and if I’m okay with plant locations. Tip: Revise power plant engineering and thermal engineering; prepare a clear “Why BHEL?”

Questions: Why BHEL? Why heavy engineering? Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Willingness to work at plant sites. Tip: Show genuine interest in power sector and nation-building; be clear on relocation.

Experience 2: GET (Electrical) – Selected ✅

Section titled “Experience 2: GET (Electrical) – Selected ✅”

Date: November 2024 · Branch: Electrical · Package: ₹6–7.2 LPA

Technical was on power systems, machines, power electronics, and control systems. A few questions on transmission and distribution. Aptitude was moderate. Tip: Practice BHEL previous year papers; time management across technical and aptitude matters.

Project discussion, then: explain slip in induction motor, power factor improvement, protection schemes, and basics of grid. They asked about my interest in power generation. Tip: Know your final-year project thoroughly; link it to power/industrial applications if possible.

Short round: family background, why BHEL, knowledge of BHEL’s products (turbines, boilers, etc.), willingness to join as GET. Tip: Research BHEL’s role in India’s power sector and its product range.

  • Mechanical: Thermodynamics, Rankine cycle, boilers, turbines, heat transfer, manufacturing processes.
  • Electrical: Power systems, machines, protection, transmission & distribution, power factor.
  • General: Power generation basics, plant operations, safety practices.
  • Why BHEL? Why heavy engineering?
