## Overview
**How to prepare for a job interview as a fresher:** find out the company's rounds, then prepare for each one in order. Most campus drives run an online assessment, one or two technical interviews and an HR round. Service companies weight aptitude, basic coding and communication; product companies weight data structures and algorithms in every technical round. Practise your answers out loud, run mock interviews, and read recent interview experiences for the company you are targeting.

This page is the starting point. Each step links to the company pages on this site that go deeper.

## Interview rounds at a glance

Typical India campus order (**candidate-reported**): eligibility shortlist → pre-placement talk → [online assessment](https://placementpapers.app/online-assessments/) → group discussion (some service drives) → technical interview(s) → HR or managerial round.

| Company type | Typical rounds | What the interview tests | Example |
| - | - | - | - |
| Service IT | Online test → technical → HR | Aptitude, basic coding, core CS subjects, communication | [TCS](https://placementpapers.app/tcs/): NQT, then a 30-45 min technical and a 20-30 min managerial/HR round |
| Product / big tech | OA → 2+ technical rounds → hiring manager or behavioural round | DSA depth, code quality, later system design | [Microsoft](https://placementpapers.app/microsoft/), [Google](https://placementpapers.app/google/) (adds a hiring committee review) |
| Banks | Online test → banking or technical interview → HR | Aptitude, banking awareness, communication | [HDFC Bank](https://placementpapers.app/hdfc-bank/), [SBI PO](https://placementpapers.app/sbi/) (prelims, mains, then group exercise and interview) |
| PSUs | GATE score shortlist → group discussion → personal interview | Core engineering subject, HR fit | [NTPC](https://placementpapers.app/ntpc/), [BPCL](https://placementpapers.app/bpcl/) |

## Step-by-step interview preparation plan

1. **Confirm eligibility first.** Check the CGPA, backlog and branch rules on the drive notice before you prepare. See [CGPA requirements](https://placementpapers.app/cgpa-requirements/) and [eligibility criteria](https://placementpapers.app/eligibility-criteria/).
2. **Learn the exact round structure.** Open the company's hub on this site and note the number of rounds, their length and whether there is a group discussion or communication test.
3. **Clear the online assessment.** It is usually the biggest elimination step. Practise timed papers from the company's previous year question papers page, and see the [OA guide](https://placementpapers.app/online-assessments/).
4. **Prepare the technical interview.**
   - Revise the core subjects interviewers ask freshers most: OOP, DBMS and SQL, operating systems, computer networks, and one programming language in depth.
   - Pick one or two projects and be ready to explain the problem, your design, what you built yourself and what you would change.
   - For product companies, practise DSA problems out loud, explaining your approach before you code. See [best coding platforms](https://placementpapers.app/best-coding-platforms/).
5. **Prepare the HR round.** Write and rehearse answers to the questions below, and read the company's bond, relocation and shift policies so nothing in the offer surprises you.
6. **Run mock interviews.** At least two, with a friend, senior or placement cell, one technical and one HR. Record one and watch it back.
7. **Read recent interview experiences** for the company in the last cycle (links below), and note the questions that repeat.
8. **Prepare the day.** Keep your resume, ID and admit card ready. For online rounds, test the camera, microphone and connection in advance.

## Common HR interview questions and how to answer them

These questions come up across the HR pages on this site, from [Infosys](https://placementpapers.app/infosys/hr-interview-questions/) and [TCS](https://placementpapers.app/tcs/hr-interview-questions/) to banks such as [HSBC](https://placementpapers.app/hsbc/hr-interview-questions/).

| Question | What the interviewer is checking | How to answer |
| - | - | - |
| Tell me about yourself | Communication and focus | 60-90 seconds: degree, one or two projects or internships, skills that match the role, why this job |
| Why this company? | Whether you researched them | Name something specific: their business, a service line, the training programme, the role itself |
| Why should we hire you? | Fit with the role | Link two or three of your strengths to what the role needs, with one example each |
| Strengths and weaknesses | Self-awareness | One real strength with proof, one real weakness with what you are doing about it |
| Where do you see yourself in five years? | Whether you will stay and grow | Growth inside the role and company: deeper skills, more responsibility |
| Describe a challenge you handled | Problem solving under pressure | Use STAR: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Keep the focus on what you did |
| Are you willing to relocate? | Flexibility | Answer honestly. Service companies post freshers across India delivery centres |
| Are you comfortable with the bond / shifts? | Whether you read the offer terms | Ask for the exact clause in advance and answer from it. See the [TCS](https://placementpapers.app/tcs/) hub on bonds |
| What are your salary expectations? | Realism | For campus roles the CTC is usually fixed. Say you are comfortable with the offered package. See the [salary guide](https://placementpapers.app/salary-guide/) |
| Do you have any questions for us? | Interest | Ask about training, the first project or team, or what new joiners find hardest |

Banks add role-specific questions. Candidate-reported examples on the [HDFC Bank](https://placementpapers.app/hdfc-bank/) hub include whether you would work in a tier-2 city and "What is CASA?"; the [Axis Bank](https://placementpapers.app/axis-bank/) hub suggests a 90-second introduction plus three of the bank's products.

## AI interviews, video interviews and communication rounds

More drives now include a round scored by software instead of a person. What candidates report on this site:

| Company | Round | What candidates report |
| - | - | - |
| [Accenture](https://placementpapers.app/accenture/) | Communication Assessment | About 20 minutes of AI-graded spoken English after the cognitive, technical and coding sections: read-aloud, repeat and short spoken answers; audio often cannot be replayed (candidate-reported, 2026) |
| [Cognizant](https://placementpapers.app/cognizant/) | Communication / spoken English | Listen-and-repeat and spoken English stages; some drives add an AI bot in the technical round |
| [JP Morgan](https://placementpapers.app/jp-morgan/) | HireVue video screen | About two ~3-minute recorded HR videos with 2-3 attempts, best finished within 2-3 days of the invite |
| [Deloitte](https://placementpapers.app/deloitte/), [EY](https://placementpapers.app/ey/) | Versant English test | A spoken English test with a microphone after the online assessment |
| [LTIMindtree](https://placementpapers.app/mindtree/) | Communication round | Ranked as a separate round on some drives |

How to prepare:
- **Use a wired or reliable headset** and sit in a quiet room. Several Cognizant candidates mention this as the main mistake to avoid.
- **Expect one playback.** Listen fully before you answer, because clips often play only once.
- **Practise speaking for 10 minutes a day** into your phone and play it back, as the EY page suggests for Versant.
- **For recorded video answers,** look at the camera, keep answers to the time limit and use STAR for behavioural questions. JP Morgan candidates report that skipping HireVue practice after coding-only prep is the biggest mistake.
- **Check proctoring rules** before online rounds: webcam on, ID check, and no tab switching.

## Frequently asked questions

**How do I prepare for a job interview as a fresher?**

Start with the company's round structure, then prepare in that order: the online assessment, the technical interview (core subjects, DSA and your own projects), and the HR round (introduction, why this company, relocation and bond questions). Practise answers out loud, do at least two mock interviews, and read recent interview experiences for the company.

**What are the most common HR interview questions for freshers?**

Tell me about yourself, why this company, why should we hire you, your strengths and weaknesses, where you see yourself in five years, describe a challenge you handled, whether you are willing to relocate, your salary expectations, and whether you have any questions for the interviewer.

**What is an AI interview?**

An AI interview is a recorded or automated round where software, not a person, scores your answers. Campus drives use it for spoken English checks (Accenture's Communication Assessment, Versant at Deloitte and EY) and for recorded video answers (HireVue at JP Morgan). Use a headset, a quiet room and a stable connection, and expect clips that play only once.

**How should I answer "Tell me about yourself" in a placement interview?**

Keep it to about 60-90 seconds: your degree and college, one or two projects or internships with what you built, the skills that match the role, and one line on why you want this job. Do not repeat your whole resume.

**How long does it take to prepare for a campus interview?**

Service-company interviews usually need a few weeks of revision of core subjects, one project you can explain in depth, and HR practice. Product-company interviews need months of steady DSA practice on top of that, because they test problem solving in every technical round.
